Biden admin launching pilot program to allow private sponsorship of refugees

The Biden administration is expected to announce a pilot program Thursday that would allow groups of private citizens to sponsor refugees directly.

More than just financial support, the private citizens would be responsible for developing a plan for the refugees fleeing violence from across the world. Welcome Corps, a State Department program, will enable citizens to sponsor refugees through the Refugee Resettlement Program if they raise enough funds, pass background checks, and have a plan for how to support them, Fox News reported.

Under the pilot program, groups of at least five people will be expected to raise a minimum of $2,275 per refugee assigned to them by the government, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Not only could the new program increase the number of refugees the United States takes in, but it could also cut down on government spending. The program will aim to find American sponsors for 5,000 refugees in fiscal 2023, which ends at the end of September, another source told the global news outlet.

The individual sponsorship program is similar to one deployed in Canada and is part of a broader goal for the Biden administration to allow access to refugees from across the globe. Just last year, the president’s administration began a new refugee plan for Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

The pilot program was reportedly meant to launch before the end of 2022, but the State Department said the timetable shifted.
