Oklahoma‘s Republican Party approved a resolution condemning and withdrawing support from Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) over his negotiations with Democrats on a border deal.
In a resolution passed on Saturday, the state party criticized a deal Senate negotiators, including Lankford, have been working on that would close down the border if migrant crossings exceed certain levels. In the resolution, the Oklahoma party accused Lankford of having betrayed not only his party and state but his oath to the Constitution as well.
“Senator Lankford playing fast and loose with Democrats on our border policy not only disenfranchises legal immigrants seeking citizenship but it also puts the safety and security of Americans in great danger,” the resolution said.
“Authorizing several thousand people to invade our borders before any action can be taken is contrary to the oath that Senator Lankford took to the Constitution and therefore outside of the area that he is authorized to negotiate in,” it continued.

It concluded by demanding that Lankford “cease and desist jeopardizing the security and liberty of the people of Oklahoma and of these United States,” withdrawing all support from him until he does.
A group of bipartisan Senate negotiators are working on a compromise bill to help stifle the chaos at the United States-Mexico border, with both sides expressing optimism about the bill’s progress. One of the provisions of the bill would give the Biden administration a new expulsion authority if illegal crossings exceed 4,000 a day — with the authority automatically triggering if they exceed 5,000 daily per week or 8,500 in a single day, a detail that enraged and was cited by the Oklahoma GOP in justifying their action against Lankford.
