Donald Trump mused Saturday about whether his signature wall he proposed along the Mexico border will be named after him once it is erected.
“Maybe they will name it ‘the Trump Wall.’ I don’t know, I don’t know,” the GOP front-runner said during a rally Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y., ahead of the New York primary on Tuesday.
Trump’s vow to build a wall, and his assertion he force Mexico to pay for it, has been a cornerstone of his campaign since he launched his bid last June.
Trump said Saturday that the wall will help stem the tide of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs.
“Walls work. All you have to do is ask Israel. Walls work,” Trump said, referring to a barrier blocking Palestinians in parts of the West Bank from entering Israel outside of checkpoints.
Trump recently released a widely criticized plan to pay for the border wall by preventing immigrants in the U.S. from sending money back to their families. Critics said the move could destroy the Mexican economy. Trump said he would allow the remittances to continue if Mexico makes a one-time payment of up to $10 billion.
He has also added that there is a trade deficit currently with Mexico, and that fixing that could pay for the wall. Trump estimates the wall will cost around $10 billion, but other estimates have pegged such a wall at more than double that amount.
Trump is far ahead in the New York primary, with RealClearPolitics’ polling average showing him ahead by 31 points.
