The Department of Homeland Security released a Thanksgiving-themed video on Thursday to promote its immigration enforcement plans, saying illegal immigrants in the country won’t get “second helpings.”
The video features a compilation of Thanksgiving and Americana aesthetics to the tune of Johnny Cash’s “Thanksgiving Prayer” before shifting gears to Creed’s “Higher.” The video concludes with a shot of President Donald Trump in 1992 throwing a football in Buffalo, New York.
“Happy Thanksgiving. No second helpings for illegal aliens,” the video reads.
The video also features shots from Creed’s 2001 performance during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game, and a scene from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Creed’s performance at the game is widely heralded, as it was performed just two months after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The DHS and the Trump administration have shared various video edits promoting the administration’s agenda, including deportations. In September, the DHS shared a video parodying the Pokemon franchise, and another video featured comedian and podcast host Theo Von.
AS AN IMMIGRANT, I LOVE THANKSGIVING
Von, whose real name is Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski, requested the “banger” video featuring him to be taken down, saying he didn’t approve of being in it. He later said his inclusion in the DHS post caused him to be “paranoid.”
Trump pardoned two turkeys, Gobble and Waddle, on Tuesday prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, during which he joked that former President Joe Biden “used an autopen” in last year’s pardoning ceremony. The president joked that a Justice Department investigation of Biden’s autopen usage nullified the pardons from last year.
