Days after GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump said he would bar Muslim immigrants from entering the U.S., the business mogul’s name disappeared from giant billboards in Dubai that had celebrated his company’s partnership with a local property group to create a luxurious residential development.
On Thursday, sources reported Trump’s name, previously plastered all over billboards advertising the luxury properties, had been removed overnight and replaced with blank spaces.
The $6 billion project, named Akoya, was launched by Damac Properties and the Trump Organization a year and a half ago. Trump’s recent statements regarding Islam, however, appear to have offended his United Arab Emirates business partner.
A Damac Properties official declined to comment on the billboards’ new appearance, but did confirm the company would continue its business agreement with Trump despite his recent comments which have offended many in the region.
Earlier this week, Dubai-based Landmark Group announced it was removing Trump’s home décor line from its 180 stores as a result of the Republican’s immigration stance.
Trump’s policy positions have cost him business partners in the past. Following his presidential announcement in June, Trump called out some Mexican illegal immigrants as “rapists” who are bringing crime and drugs to the U.S. Following those remarks, Univision and its NBC parent refused to air the Miss USA pageant, which Trump owned rights to.
