Fact Check: Did Dick Durbin ‘Reveal Why He Lied’ About Trump’s Use of S***hole?

Fake news has recently sprung up regarding President Donald Trump’s alleged use of the term “shithole,” claiming that Senator Dick Durbin has “revealed why he lied about Trump saying” the word.

The Washington Post broke the original story of Trump’s comments, reporting that:

President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they discussed protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal.” “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to countries mentioned by the lawmakers.

Durbin, who was one of the lawmakers in the meeting, confirmed that the comments used in the Post’s story were accurate. “And then he went on when he started to describe the immigration from Africa…calling the nations they come from ‘sh*tholes,’” Durbin told reporters on Friday. “That was the nature of this conversation.”

That’s where the fake news enters the scene. Capitol Conservative ran the headline, “Sen. Dick Durbin Just Revealed Why He Lied About Trump Saying ‘S***hole.’” The story shifts to stating that Durbin, during an event celebrating Martin Luther King on Monday, “practically admitted that he used the ‘S***hole’ accusation as a bargaining chip in the DACA negotiations.”

The senator did nothing of the sort.

Durbin, in fact, told reporters on Monday that, contrary to some speculation, it was not “shithouse” that he claims to have heard, but “shithole.”

“Could it have been either word then?” a reporter asked Durbin. “No,” the senator replied. “I stick with my original interpretation. I am stunned that this is their defense.”

Reports that Durbin “revealed why he lied” about Trump’s comment are false.

And this fake news stinks.
