Cruz ‘absolutely’ supports ending birthright citizenship

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz reaffirmed his support for much of Donald Trump’s immigration plan Wednesday, including the controversial end to birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Appearing on “The Michael Medved Show,” Cruz told the host that he actually backs “virtually every element” of the plan Trump put forward.

“Absolutely. We should end granting automatic birthright citizenship to the children of those who are here illegally,” Cruz told Medved. “That has been my position from the very first day of my running for the Senate. I was advocating this back in 2011.”

“I welcome Donald Trump articulating this view,” Cruz added to the host. “It’s a view I have long held.” The 2016 hopeful added that many of Trump’s proposals were contained in legislation he filed.

Trump’s plan also calls for a wall to be built along the U.S./Mexico border, at Mexico’s expense.

In 2011, Cruz said that while ending birthright might be “desirable as a policy outcome,” he did not think it was “consistent with the Constitution.”

‘I don’t think their argument is consistent with the Constitution,” Cruz said at the time. “And so even if that outcome might be desirable as a policy outcome, I think we have an obligation to be faithful to the Constitution.”
