House Democrats met Tuesday morning following Congress’ summer recess and stressed their desire to tackle the major issues facing the country before members leave for yet another break.
Members of Congress will leave town in just a few short days to campaign for the November midterm elections. The House Democratic Leadership expressed concern Tuesday that there isn’t enough time to address the growing threats abroad and in the country. Immigration reform, the threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and passing a continuing resolution all sit before Congress.
Rep. Xavier Becerra, D-Calif., said he’s pleased President Obama will take action on immigration. However, he expressed his frustration that it won’t happen until after the November elections. Obama announced last week he’d wait until after the midterms to move on immigration, something many see as a move to help vulnerable Democrats in key Senate and House races.
Becerra said that House Democrats are eagerly awaiting Obama’s Wednesday news conference, where he is expected to announce steps to deal with the Islamic State.
