President Donald Trump blocked Canada from opening a bridge to Michigan until it “fully compensated” the United States.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project, named after the hockey legend, is set to be the largest cable-stayed bridge in North America, spanning over half a mile between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. In a Monday post on Truth Social, Trump blasted the project, claiming Canada had ripped off the U.S. He demanded proper compensation before he would approve its completion.
He bemoaned that Canada owns both sides of the bridge and that it was built “with virtually no U.S. content.”
“President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just ‘take advantage of America!’ What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING!” Trump wrote.
The president then directed his rage toward Ontario’s boycott of U.S. alcohol and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s overtures to China, “which will eat Canada alive.”
“We’ll just get the leftovers! I don’t think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup,” Trump wrote, repeating an earlier claim.
He said that he would block the opening of the bridge until the U.S. was “fully compensated for everything we have given them” and until Canada “treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve.”

“We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical,” Trump concluded.
The move is the latest rift between Trump and the U.S.’s northern neighbor, which has frequently been the subject of his ire in his second term. Carney’s overtures toward China have sparked the most fury, with Trump threatening to impose 100% tariffs on Canada if the two sign a trade pact.
