Denmark police on the hunt for cafe gunman

Danish authorities are still looking for a gunman who opened fire on a free-speech event in Copenhagen where controversial cartoonist Lars Vilks was speaking, according to the Associated Press.

One man was killed, and three police officers were wounded when the gunman fired into the Krudttoenden café in Copenhagen, which was Vilks for a panel on, “Art, Blasphemy and the Freedom of Expression.” Vilks has been targeted by Islamic extremists for his controversial renderings of the Prophet Muhammed.

French ambassador to Denmark, François Zimeray, was also in attendance and was to speak about the brutal attacks on Charlie Hebdo last month, which left 12 cartoonists, staff members and a police officer guarding the Paris satirical weekly dead.

Zimeray tweeted “still alive in room” shortly after a reported 30 rounds were fired at the gathering.

The fatality was a 40-year-old male who attended the presentation, according to news reports.

According to the AP, the gunman was between 25-30 years old, and police released a blurred photograph of the suspect wearing dark clothes and a scarf, according to reports.

Vilks was taken to safety, according to various Twitter feeds of Danish media.
