The Ukrainian military needs “at least” 100 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, to launch an “effective” counterattack against Russia, said Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksii Reznikov.

The Biden administration has provided Ukraine with a dozen HIMARS, eight of which are already in theater, and Reznikov, who appeared at an event with the Atlantic Council Tuesday morning, said Ukrainian forces have already used them to “destroy approximately 30 command stations.”

“This has significantly slowed down the Russians’ events and dramatically decreased the intensity of their artillery shelling,” the Ukrainian defense leader explained, noting that the country needed “at least 55” HIMARS to “effectively hold back the enemy.”
The United States has already provided the Ukrainian military with more than $7 billion in military aid since Russia invaded on Feb. 24.
This aid includes more than 1,400 Stinger anti-aircraft systems, 6,500 Javelin anti-armor systems, over 20,000 other anti-armor systems, 700 switchblade unmanned aerial systems, 12 HIMARS, 126 155 mm Howitzers, and up to 411,000 155 mm artillery rounds among many other weapons, according to a Department of Defense fact sheet from July 8.
