Police: FedEx facility was not the intended ‘target’ of latest Texas package bomb

Chief Michael Hansen, of Schertz, Texas, told reporters Tuesday the 75 workers at the FedEx facility where a package bomb went off overnight were “very fortunate” not to have been injured or killed in the incident.

“We were very fortunate that there were no injuries,” Hansen said during a press conference.

“It is very early in the investigation, obviously. But we’re confident that neither this facility, nor any location in the Schertz area, was a target,” he added.

The package had been traveling down an automated conveyor belt when it exploded. One female worker at the facility complained of ear-ringing and was treated and released.

The explosion was called into the police at 12:25 a.m. local time Tuesday. The San Antonio Police Department bomb unit; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; and the FBI were all deployed to the scene, which is approximately 65 miles southwest of Austin, Texas.

Other federal officials at the press conference later said they could not confirm the FedEx facility was not the intended target.
