U.S. and coalition partners hit Islamic State of Iraq and Syria fighters hard Friday night in a barrage of 22 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, the Pentagon said Saturday.
The U.S. targeted checkpoints in an attempt to restrict the fighters movements, said Colonel Wayne Marotto, chief spokesman for the Combined Joint Task Force.
The Islamic State suffered the most damage from six strikes in the town of Mosul in Iraq. The six airstrikes decimated a staging area, a tactical unit, a tank and heavy machine gun emplacements.
Airstrikes were also carried out in six other towns, including Baiji, Falluja, Makhmur, Ramadi, Sinjar and Tal Afar. A coalition statement listed a number of vehicles and weapons destroyed, while also eliminating sniper emplacements.
Coalition forces continued strikes through the night over Syria, where the Islamic State was struck in the towns of Al Haskah, Ar Raqqah and Tal Abyad.
