A Pentagon spokesman confirmed late Tuesday that the U.S. service member and his family injured in the Brussels terrorist attacks belonged to the Air Force and was stationed at the Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands.
The member’s family was present during the attack and also sustained various injuries. The Department of Defense said it will continue to withhold the name of the family due to privacy concerns.
“We are saddened by today’s attacks and extend our sincere condolences to the victims and families of those impacted,” Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James said in a statement. “Our priority at this time is the safety and well-being of our airmen and their families.”
More than 30 people were killed in three attacks in Belgium’s capital city Tuesday morning. Hundreds more were injured, including eight Americans.
