Retired three-star general Gary Volesky suspended for tweet mocking Jill Biden

A retired three-star general has been suspended from his Army contract after writing a social media post that appeared to mock first lady Jill Biden.

Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky replied to Biden’s post on June 24 regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, saying he was glad Biden “finally knew what a woman is.” He was then suspended from his contract, which paid him $92 an hour, and is now under investigation, according to USA Today.

“Lt. Gen. Theodore Martin, commanding general of the Combined Arms Center, has suspended retired Lt. Gen. Gary Volesky from performing duties as an Highly Qualified Expert— Senior Mentor pending the outcome of the commander’s inquiry,” Cynthia Smith, an Army spokeswoman, told the Washington Examiner.

Biden had written in her post that women’s rights regarding abortion had been “stolen” with the Supreme Court’s decision. Volesky’s response has since been deleted.

Volesky’s tweet appeared to be a reference to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing in March, when Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) asked Jackson to define the word “woman” in the context of transgender rights. Jackson responded that she could not define the word.

In July 2021, Volesky responded to a tweet from Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) about her participation in the House Jan. 6 select committee. Volesky appeared to criticize the committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
