Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi, who has been jailed in Mexico for the past six months, may be returning home soon.
The U.S. Marine was arrested on the Mexican border on weapons charges when he crossed over from California with three guns in his truck. Tahmooressi was receiving treatment for post traumatic stress disorder at the time of his arrest but the Mexican government says they don’t have the resources to continue his treatment. This has caused outrage among those who say he essentially took a wrong turn into Mexico and should’ve been released immediately.
“To me this is an abomination. Six months,” said Lt. Cmdr. Montel Williams. “He didn’t hesitate to say, ‘Aye, aye sir,’ to go off and serve. How dare we, how dare we as a nation hesitate to get that young man back.”
“I must say that I am confident that a humanitarian release of Andrew will occur very soon so he can start getting better and get the treatment he needs,” Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., assured the room during the House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing Wednesday.
Tahmooressi’s mother and other military members were also in attendance.
