Nearly three-fourths of Americans skeptical of ‘no troops on ground’ pledge

Almost three-quarters of Americans are skeptical of President Obama’s claim that no U.S. ground troops will be used to battle the Islamic State terror group, and nearly half are OK with that, according to a poll released Sunday.

The Wall Street Journal reports 72 percent of registered voters said they believe U.S. ground troops will eventually be deployed to combat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which has taken huge chunks of territory in both of those countries. Only 20 percent believe the president’s pledge no ground forces will be used, according to the Journal/NBC News/Annenberg survey.

The survey also found 45 percent of Americans would favor using ground forces if military officials determine it is necessary to defeat the Islamic State.

The survey of 1,283 registered voters was conducted Sept. 19-25, and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.15 percentage points.
