OPM to brief Intel panel on data breach

The House Intelligence Committee will meet privately tonight with the top official from the Office of Personnel Management to discuss the massive data breach involving up to 4 million federal workers and retirees.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., told reporters he spoke Monday with OPM Director Katherine Archuleta and that OPM is “trying to make sure they know what the facts are” in the case.

So far, federal officials have disclosed that they believe Chinese hackers are responsible for breaking into the system and stealing critical personal information about federal employees, including those working for the FBI and Secret Service. But the White House hasn’t formally confirmed that the thieves were based in China.

Hoyer said thousands of his constituents are federal employees and are potentially impacted by the data breach.
