South Carolina’s cyber security agency is warning other state agencies about a software bug that experts say could create havoc on websites using a certain type of secure connection, the Greenville News reports.
Part of the concern, the News reports, is that the state’s computer system is so decentralized.
Some lawmakers have expressed frustration with the state’s decentralization, saying it could leave the state open to another data breach.
A hacker in 2012 broke into the state Department of Revenue’s computer servers and stole data for millions of South Carolina taxpayers and businesses. A year and a half later, the state doesn’t know how many agencies are following its cyber security policies or how many data breaches have occurred, senators were told earlier this month.
A state inspector general’s report in 2012 found that there are more than 100 separate agency and college computer systems.
