New Web site tracks state spending

Maryland citizens can now track where their tax dollars are going on a new searchable Web site launched this week, state officials announced.

The “Maryland Funding Accountability” site was required by legislation passed by the General Assembly last year and applies to all Executive Branch expenditures of $25,000 or more per year. The site includes the name of each payee, their ZIP code, amount of payment and the state agency that made the payment.

Government watchdogs praised the site, which was prepared in-house by the new state Department of Information Technology. The legislation was the “primary focus” of citizen’s advocacy group Common Cause Maryland during the 2008 session, said Executive Director Ryan O’Donnell.

“Where you find transparency, you find good government,” O’Donnell said.
