Amazon announced over the weekend that it’s reversing its position on encryption, after it was reported last week that the company had removed the option of encrypting data on its Fire operating systems.
“We will return the option for full-disk encryption with a Fire OS update coming this spring,” company spokeswoman Robin Handaly told Reuters on Sunday. The move affects Amazon’s Kindle e-readers and other devices that use its Fire operating system, including cell phones, tablets and televisions.

The company removed the option for users to use encryption in the last update of its software, and called it an “enterprise feature” that customers “weren’t using.” The announcement came right in the middle of Apple’s high-profile battle with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in order to avoid helping the agency to bypass encryption on its own products, causing critics to question the timing of Amazon’s decision.
