Anonymous says it stopped terror plot in Italy

The hacking group Anonymous claims it stopped a terrorist attack by the Islamic State in Italy over Christmas.

“In this month we are working in silence. We have already foiled 1 attack #ISIS against #Italy, we hope to block others,” one of the group’s Twitter accounts claimed. It did not provide details, but said that an explanatory video would be forthcoming. “We don’t need to be believed, the important thing is that no one dies,” the account added.

The message was published through the group’s “OpParisOfficial” account, which was established after the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris. The hacking group said it was going to begin targeting the Islamic State in retribution for the attacks, and claims to have disabled more than 20,000 social media accounts affiliated with the Islamic State since that time.

“Anonymous from all over the world will hunt you down,” the group said in a video message at the time. “You should know that we will find you and we will not let you go. … Expect massive cyberattacks. War is declared. Get prepared.”

“Our capability to take down ISIS is a direct result of our collective’s sophisticated hackers, data miners, and spies that we have all around the world,” Alex Poucher, a spokesman for Anonymous, told Russia Today in November. “We have people very, very close to ISIS on the ground, which makes gathering intel about ISIS and related activities very easy for us.”

“They picked a fight with Anonymous when they attacked Paris, and now they should expect us,” Poucher added, saying that the group “will not sit by and watch these terror attacks unfold around the world.”
