OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reportedly issued a “code red” to improve and enhance ChatGPT as other tech giants gain ground on improving their artificial intelligence chatbot models.
Founded as one of the first modern, globally popular, public-facing AI chatbots, ChatGPT has held a dominance in the sector for several years. However, as competitors such as Google develop increasingly advanced chatbot models, OpenAI is reportedly feeling the pressure to perform better.
According to multiple reports, Altman issued a companywide letter on Monday declaring a “code red” to improve the everyday experience of ChatGPT. The CEO wants to improve the chatbot’s user personalization, the range of questions it can answer, and its speed and reliability, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT for the company, wrote on X on Monday evening that the launch of competitor products is pushing OpenAI to do better.
“Today, ChatGPT is the #1 AI assistant worldwide, with around 70% of assistant usage. New products are launching every week, which is great — it pushes us to move faster and keep raising the bar for what an AI assistant can do,” Turley wrote.
He added that the competition is driving ChatGPT to continue to grow.
“As more people ask ChatGPT not just for answers but to take action on their behalf, we see lots of room to expand,” Turley wrote. “Our focus now is to keep making ChatGPT more capable, continue growing, and expand access around the world — while making it feel even more intuitive and personal.”
OpenAI did not respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment on the memo.
Google released its latest, advanced Gemini 3 model in mid-November, leading to headlines such as “The hottest new AI company is…Google?” from CNN. Altman congratulated his competitor company on X, writing, “Congrats to Google on Gemini 3! Looks like a great model.”
In Monday’s company memo, Altman announced that ChatGPT will launch a new model next week and said internal statistics indicate the model outperforms Gemini 3, according to the reports.

The reports said the company will put the effort into improving ChatGPT for users ahead of other company initiatives, such as personal assistants.
The reported “code red” call is an ironic twist for the two tech companies. When ChatGPT first launched back in November 2022, Google declared a “code red” as it was worried the new chatbot would threaten its dominance in the internet search sphere, according to the New York Times.
