PlayStation announces it will end physical disc production for new games starting in 2028

PlayStation will discontinue physical game disc production for all new games starting January 2028, the company announced on Wednesday.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation’s parent company, said the decision is a response to shifting consumer preferences and broader trends in the entertainment industry.

“The general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the news release said. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”

PlayStation said the shift toward producing games in a digital-only format will not impact games previously released on physical discs.

The change means new PlayStation games will be available for purchase only through the online Sony store and other digital retailers.

The news has received negative feedback from PlayStation fans, with some noting that digital games have no resale value. This makes sharing and selling games more difficult and forces gamers to rely on online servers and accounts to access games, The Verge reports.

Game developer Matty Schroeder said the decision is dystopian.

“All this does is funnel everyone into digital storefronts where PlayStation and co. control the pricing operation,” he said in an X post. “This is not about upcoming handhelds or even that digital purchases outweighing physical. It is about maximizing the dollar spent everywhere and cutting out the middle man.”

BlazeMedia columnist Auron MacIntyre said Sony’s decision is part of a broader trend.

“The average person will no longer be able to own their computing power and will rent it through AI models,” he said on X. “Combine that with the fact that you can no longer own software and you have a completely digitized environment with zero means of individual ownership.”

While some X users expressed outrage, others said they didn’t mind the decision.

“I personally don’t care that there aren’t going to be anymore physical disc for PlayStation,” said Tee DeVane, a user known for reviewing technology products, on X. “I haven’t bought a hard copy game in 10 yrs. I play the game, enjoy it and that’s it. I never understand the outrage.”

Sony’s PlayStation 2 remains the world’s best-selling console. The newest iteration of the PlayStation 5 was one of last year’s top Black Friday purchases.
