How a mandated ‘kill switch’ could help regulate AI

Senators are expected to debate the concept of an artificial intelligence “kill switch” on Wednesday, as Capitol Hill reckons with calls from AI industry leaders to regulate its most advanced models.

Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., who have been largely divided on the issue of AI regulation, were thrown a monkey wrench this week when industry leaders like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk joined forces to call on developers to pump the brakes on frontier AI model progress.
