The Safety Advisory Board, which Spotify announced on Monday, will provide the music streaming service with a third-party entity that will review claims involving allegedly “harmful” content on its platform. The development resembles Facebook’s Oversight Board and appears to be in response to Spotify’s controversial decisions regarding Joe Rogan and the spread of COVID-19 misinformation.
“The idea is to bring in these world-renowned experts, many of whom have been in this space for several years, to realize a relationship with them,” Dustee Jenkins, Spotify’s global head of public affairs, told Reuters. “And to ensure that it’s not talking to them when we’re in the middle of a situation. … Instead, we’re meeting with them on a pretty regular basis so that we can be much more proactive about how we’re thinking about these issues across the company.”

The Advisory Board will feature 18 people from several think tanks. The experts will come from the Center for Democracy and Technology, the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and the Institute for Technology and Society in Brazil and will advise the company on products, policies, and emerging matters surrounding the platform.
The council is advisory in nature, and Spotify can decide to accept or reject the rulings without any repercussions, similar to Facebook’s Oversight Board. However, Spotify has differentiated the Advisory Board from Facebook’s Oversight Board by requiring the company to submit relevant issues to the council before they will be considered. This will give the company more control over what the board considers.

Spotify became a source of controversy after musician Neil Young told the streaming service to remove Rogan’s podcast or risk losing his music after the former MMA fighter and podcast host provided a platform to COVID-19 vaccine skeptics such as Dr. Robert Malone. The company sided with Rogan, arguing that he was necessary for “achieving our bold ambitions.”
The company also incorporated additional guidelines regarding controversial subjects, such as attaching content advisories that may provide context on podcasts dealing with controversial subjects like the COVID-19 vaccines.
