Trump: Shut down government to defund Planned Parenthood

Donald Trump voiced his support in shutting down the federal government in order to defund Planned Parenthood.

The Republican presidential contender was asked on the “Hugh Hewitt Show” Monday night if he supported letting the government shut down in September in order to defund Planned Parenthood. “Well I can tell you this: I would,” Trump replied.

The comments come in the wake of a series of controversial undercover videos showing organization officials discussing the sale of fetal tissues. Republicans have expressed outrage, while pro-abortion rights groups say the videos have been heavily edited and are extremely misleading.

The last time Republicans attempted to shut down the government over something: Obamacare in 2013, which failed.

“I was also in support if the Republicans stuck together you could have done it with Obamacare also, but the Republicans decided not to stick together and they left a few people out there like Ted Cruz,” Trump said. “You know, they left a lot of the people that really went in and wanted to do the job and you know what? If they had stuck together they would have won that battle.”

“I think you have to in this case also, yes,” he added about shutting down the government in order to shut down Planned Parenthood.

Trump’s comment comes as he remains at the top of many GOP polls, putting pressure on other Republican candidates to match his outspoken ways.
