Why climate change inconveniences Martha Stewart

She may never have uttered “climate change” or “global warming,” but on Martha Stewart’s most recent trip to Washington, she hinted at why a hotter planet isn’t a good thing. “Here is a picture of my peony garden, which blooms, well, it used to bloom in early June … and that was only 10 years ago, but year after year it has bloomed earlier and earlier,” Stewart told a crowd gathered at the DAR Constitution Hall on Thursday evening. “So it’s very hard to plan my peony party,” she griped, getting a big laugh from the crowd.

This year’s crop of peonies bloomed on May 14. “Three weeks earlier than 10 years ago, which is pretty sad,” she continued. “But nature is fickle and mankind is even more fickle.” Stewart was a guest of the Smithsonian Associates, speaking for exactly an hour (she’s very punctual) and then signing copies of her new book, “Martha’s Entertaining: A Year of Celebrations.”
