White House crashers use party to say America’s Polo Cup still on

The Salahis want you to save the date for America’s Polo Cup.

Sure, the Indian contenders bowed out and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs is investigating charity fraud linked to the organization, but that doesn’t mean the party-crashing duo plan to back down.

In fact, the Salahis’  pet project, America’s Polo Cup, will sponsor an upcoming Valentine’s Day party to increase exposure for the event.

“Their reasoning for going into it is that they just want people to know that the Polo Cup is still happening this year in June,” event planner Kelly Ann Collins told Yeas & Nays about requesting an appearance by the Salahis and America’s Polo Cup sponsorship for her event.

The Salahis’ rep, Mahogany Jones, confirmed the polo match still is in the works, but said she cannot comment on their plans for securing another nation to compete. The  America’s Polo Cup Web site is selling tickets and has a live countdown until June 11.

When Collins’ first sent Facebook invitations for a dinner featuring the Salahis, the event was titled “An Evening With Tareq & Michaele Salahi.” Within hours, the name was changed to “Virginia (Wine) Is For Lovers!”  and “presented by America’s Polo Cup” was removed from the subtitle.

In addition, the event’s location changed from a dinner at Teatro Goldoni, where Tareq Salahi would serve as an enologist of wines served, to a nightclub party without a determined location.

“Teatro Goldoni will no longer be the venue for the event on February 11th,” the restaurant’s management said in an e-mail to Yeas & Nays.

Collins said she thinks the restaurant backed out because of the attention they were receiving from the event.

“I think it was just taking up more time than he thought it would for one event. It would have involved a lot more security,” Collins said.

As party sponsors, the couple did not write a check, but rather offered up their mailing list to publicize the event.

The date of the party is not set, but either way, the Salahis appear to be edging their way back onto the party circuit, uninvited or not.
