Acorns, acorns, everywhere: Martha Stewart acorn decorations spotted in Blair House

Thinking, of course, of the troubled community organizing group ACORN with 1990s ties to President Obama, Republican Iowa Rep. Steve King chuckled when he found a batch of acorn-shaped cookies being served at the White House.

“I didn’t expect to see such stark symbolism,” King said at the time. But there are more acorns in Washington this Christmas than just those cookies. And some are right across the street.

When the Magazine Publishers of America were asked to help decorate 17 rooms in the Blair House, the Martha Stewart Living folks were assigned the presidential guest house’s entryway. They used a gold oak leaf wreath, a gold feather tree and, well, glittered acorns to make the area look festive.

“We definitely thought acorns and golds and browns,” Hannah Milman of Martha Stewart Living explained in a Dec. 15 segment debuting the Blair House decorations on “The Martha Stewart Show.”

But why did acorns come to mind when the decorators laid eyes on the Blair House entryway?

It seems the “state” tree of Washington, D.C., is a scarlet oak, Milman said, and a scarlet oak has acorns.

Who knew?
