Prominent news anchors have met with Darren Wilson ahead of the Ferguson, Mo., grand jury’s decision on the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown, according to CNN‘s Brian Stelter.
Brown was unarmed when he was shot dead by local police officer Darren Wilson, who says he was acting in self defense.
“Some high-profile news anchors have met Wilson. They’ve talked with him one-on-one in secret locations, entirely off the record, all in the hopes of landing his first television interview,” said Stelter on his program Sunday. “Because it was off the record, those anchors can’t talk about the meeting. And their networks can’t confirm the meetings happened.”
Stelter said the anchors who have met with Wilson include NBC’s Matt Lauer, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, CBS’s Scott Pelly and CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon.
A grand jury is currently deliberating whether to indict Wilson for a crime. An interview with Wilson, who is in hiding since the incident and who most people know very little about, would likely generate gigantic ratings for the first person to land it.
