Donald Trump said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton is guilty of worse transgressions than David Petraeus, but has avoided consequences by playing politics.
“Look at Petraeus. A good guy, he made a mistake. And by the way leave the guy alone. They want to demote him. He’s suffered enough,” Trump said at a campaign rally in Tulsa, Okla. “They’ve gone after him, they’ve destroyed him, and yet Hillary’s flying safe and she did a hundred times worse than what he did. ”
The Pentagon is currently considering retroactively demoting Petraeus, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, for giving classified information to his mistress and biographer before her retired. While Petraeus faces renewed scrutiny, Clinton has yet to get into any serious trouble for her handling of classified information on a private email server as secretary of state.
In recent weeks, Clinton has focused her campaign around continuing President Obama’s legacy. Although the former secretary of state worked closely with Obama for four years, Trump believes Clinton’s praise has ulterior motives.
“And you know how she is so positive about the President? You wanna know why? Because she wants to stay out of the clink, that’s why,” Trump told the audience. “She never thought the president was wonderful before, she couldn’t stand the president and frankly he couldn’t stand her.”
“She wants to make sure she gets through this thing, and he has the power of the presidency,” he added. “So who knows?”
