“The Purple Line,” “Purple Rain Park” and an airport terminal are among local landmarks natives of Minnesota’s twin cities are considering naming in honor of Prince, the native son who died suddenly this week at 57.
In the wake of Prince’s death Thursday, residents of Twin Cities, Minneapolis neighboring St. Paul, have circulated petitions to name a park and a local light rail line after the pop star, the New York Daily News reported.
Shortly after Prince’s death, fans set up a Change.org petition calling for renaming Terminal 1 at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Prince Rogers Nelson Terminal. That was late star’s given name. Another petition calls for renaming a new light rail line “the Purple Line” to honor Prince.
Prince was found dead Thursday in an elevator in his recording studio at his home in a Minneapolis suburb. He was reportedly sick with the flu in recent days, though a cause of death has not been reported.
Minneapolis City Council member Jacob Frey has called for renaming a new park in downtown Minneapolis “Prince Park” or “Purple Rain Park.”
Also, a bridge over the Mississippi was lit with purple lights by order of Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat. The Minneapolis City Hall bell tower on Sunday will ring out tunes to several songs Prince wrote or recorded: “Kiss,” “1999,” “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “When You Were Mine.”
In addition, a well-known club where music scenes in the movie “Purple Rain” were filmed was covered in purple paraphernalia to mourn Prince.
