Despite his endorsement of Donald Trump on Friday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been an outspoken opponent of policies put forth by the GOP front-runner, specifically his proposed plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States.
Soon after Trump’s Muslim proposal sent shockwaves throughout the political world, Christie blasted the plan, calling the idea of it “ridiculous” and a violation of the First Amendment.
“You do not need to be banning Muslims from the country,” Christie said shortly after. “That’s, in my view, that’s a ridiculous position and one that won’t even be productive.”
“There’s no question in my mind,” he said, when asked if Trump’s plan was a violation of the First Amendment. “But there are folks in this race who don’t care about what the law says because they’re used to being able to just fire people indiscriminately on television.”
In addition, Christie has argued that Trump doesn’t have the “temperament” to take the White House.
“Donald’s a great guy and a good person. But I just don’t think that he’s suited to be president of the United States,” he told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren in August.
“I don’t think his temperament is suited for that and I don’t think his experience is,” Christie told the host.
A day after being on the receiving end of multiple broadsides from Sen. Marco Rubio, Trump rolled out the endorsement from Christie, who dropped out of the GOP race after a sixth place in New Hampshire.
Before he dropped out, Christie sent Rubio into a tailspin, bashing him in the debate prior to New Hampshire and causing him to repeat himself multiple times, which helped send him into a fifth place finish in the Granite State.
