Shooting at Oregon community college leaves 10 dead, 20 others injured

Officials in Oregon confirmed Thursday that a shooter opened fire at Snyder Hall inside Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, killing 10 and wounding seven people.

“While it is still too early to know all of the facts… we have confirmation that the shooter is deceased. He is a 20 year old male,” Gov. Kate Brown, D-Ore, said at her brief press conference this afternoon, before departing for the Roseburg-based school.

The shooter has since been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer.

“I know I am joined by my fellow Oregonians, and Americans, in my profound dismay and heartbreak at this tragedy,” she said.

Mercer was never a student at Umpqua, according to NBC.

The college has about 3,000 full-time and 16,000 part-time students.

The Douglas County Fire Department tweeted shortly before 11 a.m. PST that there was an active shooter on campus, and to stay away from the area. Approximately 40 minutes later, the department tweeted the active shooter was no longer a threat and there were multiple casualties.

“We arrived to find multiple patients in multiple classrooms. Law enforcement was on scene and had the shooter neutralized,” Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler told CNN, adding that two patients died on the way to a hospital.

No law enforcement officers were killed in the shooting, though shots were exchanged between the shooter and authorities.
