U.S. drone strike in Pakistan kills militants

A U.S. drone hit a compound in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan Saturday, killing several militants, the Associated Press reported.

The wire service cited Pakistani intelligence officials, who said the drone killed five militants — three Uzbeks and two Pakistanis.

The AP reported that intelligence officials told them the compound had been used by Pakistani Taliban.

The U.S. has cautiously engaged in drone strikes in Pakistan to support “Operation Zarb-e-Azb,” Pakistan’s committed offensive against the Taliban in the North. Use of U.S. drones in Pakistan however is unwelcome by the majority of Pakistan’s civilian population and the U.S. has tried to tread between hitting key terrorism targets and not further riling tensions with its counterterrorism partner.

On Friday, the Pakistani Air Force reportedly killed 17 other militants in airstrikes in the same region.
