Forget North Korea: Animal rights stirs concern for South

Lately we’ve all been worried about North Korea and its dictator with nuclear power. But now one animal defense group is trying to give us a reason to be concerned about South Korea: its people’s alleged eating habits.

Protesters from In Defense of Animals planted themselves outside the Korean Embassy on Tuesday to demonstrate against the torture and butchering of cats and dogs for food in South Korea. They waived posters that asked “Companions or Cuisine?,” flashed peace signs at anyone they saw in the windows of the embassy and pushed pamphlets at anyone who walked by or came out. The group could use some more supporters, however — it was made up of only six people who stood almost silently, showing their signs to passing cars while snapping photos of each other.

The protest was part of a larger day of demonstration, with protests at embassies in Canada, London and New York City, where they were supposed to be joined by “Golden Girl” Rue McClanahan. Well, guess there’s another thing for us all to worry about.
