Coldplay frontman Chris Martin strummed guitar as he sang an acoustic version of “‘Til Kingdom Come” at Vice President Joe Biden’s son Beau’s funeral Saturday afternoon at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wilmington, Del.
“For you, I’d wait ’til kingdom come,” he sang in front of an overflow crowd of over 1,000 mourners. “Until my days, my days are done.”
Beau Biden, the former attorney general of Delaware, died at age 46 from brain cancer.
Delaware Online reported that the Coldplay frontman heard Beau loved Coldplay’s music, which inspired Martin to volunteer to fly in and sing at the emotional funeral.
President Obama delivered the eulogy at the funeral, saying that Beau was a model of selflessness and of honorable service that made him want to be a better person.
“He was the scion of an incredible family who brushed away the possibility of privilege for the harder, better reward of earning his own way. He was a soldier who dodged glory and exuded true humility. A prosecutor who defended the defenseless. A rare politician who collected more fans than foes. And the rare public figure who prioritized his private life above all else,” Obama said.
President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. were among the many dignitaries to attend the funeral.
