If you thought Donald Trump running for president was beyond the realm of possibility, an even more unlikely candidate might have just emerged for the 2020 election cycle.
At Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West may or may not have announced his intention to run for president in 2020.
West was presented with the Video Vanguard award, and ended his 11-minute speech with this bombshell: “And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”

It was an assertion that seemingly came out of nowhere, as the rest of his speech was devoted to discussing his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, his brash personality and promoting creativity in the music community.
He did add at one point, though, after discussing how he is trying to ensure successful artists can have opinions: “I’m not no politician, bro.”
For an idea of what a President West might bring to the table, here is a part of his speech that could serve as a campaign rally cry:
“We’re not gonna control our kids with brands. We not gonna teach low self-esteem and hate to our kids. We gonna teach our kids that they can be something. We gonna teach our kids that they can stand up for theyself. We gonna teach our kids to believe in themselves!”
Though West has no experience in politics, he thrust himself into political discussions in 2006 when he declared after Hurricane Katrina that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
Earlier this month, West was featured in a much-shared Instagram selfie with Hillary Clinton and his wife, Kim Kardashian.
