Actor Weaver takes a stand for oceans

Although most people associate Sigourney Weaver with fighting aliens in outer space, the actress was in town Tuesday to take on a different fight: for our oceans.

Weaver, who recently narrated the Natural Resources Defense Council documentary “Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification,” was at the Capitol on Tuesday to speak about the acidification of Earth’s oceans along with Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

“We only have one planet. Our oceans are finite, and they can only forgive so much,” Weaver said. “We tend to forget a very important fact: We depend on the ocean for survival.”

Weaver agrees with Lautenberg that the nation needs to begin moving away from using fossil fuels.

“I have 10 beautiful grandchildren,” Lautenberg said. “I want them to grow up in a healthy environment. If we love our children, grandchildren and the human race, we have to act now” on a clean energy bill.
