The governors of New York and Missouri are putting their state pride on the line by making a wager on their respective baseball teams to win the World Series.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon are continuing what has become a tradition of politicians making friendly bets during large sporting events.
According to The Kansas City Star, the loser of the seven-game series between the New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals, which starts Tuesday night, will have to wear the other team’s jersey for a day, as well as send the winning governor an assortment of foods and memorabilia representative of the losing city.

If the Royals win, Cuomo will have to send Nixon bagels from JRS Bagel Factory in Queens, Gianelli’s hot Italian sausage from central New York, original anchor bar wing sauce from western New York, a hat from the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and what the Star described as a “generous sampling” of New York craft beer.
“Good as the Metropolitans have been in the postseason, I don’t see them overcoming this playoff-seasoned team,” Nixon said in a statement to the Star.
If the Mets win, Nixon will be forced to send Cuomo the best Kansas City has to offer, including ribs from Gates BBQ, a bag of 20th-anniversary platinum edition blend coffee from The Roasterie, a commemorative jersey from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and a Ford F-150 baseball cap.
“The Mets’ strength, skill and leadership sets them apart from every other team, and their fans are truly without equal,” Cuomo said on his website. “From my hometown of Queens to stadiums across the country, this team has proven that they have what it takes to clinch the World Series, and I’m confident that is exactly what they will do.”
“I thank Governor Nixon for his participation in this friendly wager and think he will look great in blue and orange,” he said.
