More people buying their own insurance

More people are buying their own insurance, with a recent analysis showing the individual market has grown 46 percent in 2014 compared to the year before.

The analysis released Wednesday from the Kaiser Family Foundation attributes the increase to new rules instituted by Obamacare and the establishment of health exchanges.

Kaiser examined 2014 filings by insurers to state insurance departments, and found that 15.5 million people had major medical coverage in the individual insurance market.

Enrollment was also up 4.8 million over the end of 2013, a 46 percent increase, Kaiser said.

The establishment of insurance exchanges was one reason for the increase. Another was new rules established by Obamacare.

Starting last year, the healthcare law put in place new rules for what types of plans could be sold and required insurers to guarantee access to everyone regardless of health status, Kaiser said.
