Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said he’d happily accept an endorsement from reality TV personality, former Olympian and transgender celebrity Caitlyn Jenner.
“If that’s the way she feels about my candidacy, sure,” the Republican presidential candidate told Erin Burnett on CNN Thursday. “Do I have to agree with their positions on issues or how they see America? Of course not.”
Santorum is a strong social conservative who opposes same-sex marriage and has said he wold not attend a gay wedding because it would be a violation of his faith.
When previously asked about Jenner’s recent transition from man to woman Santorum said the “responsibility as a human being is to love and accept everybody.”
During an interview in April, Jenner made waves by identifying as a conservative Republican. Last week, fellow Republican presidential candidate Lindsey Graham also said he would gladly accept Jenner’s support.
“Here is the thing I always say — never ask anyone why they’re voting for you. Because you probably won’t like the answer. Because people vote for you for all sorts of reasons. And that’s fine. And I — I accept whatever reason anybody wants to vote for me, whoever they are,” Santorum told Burnett. “Of course I accept their vote.”
He added: “My, my job as a human being is to treat everybody with dignity, respect, period. Stop. Full stop. No qualification to that.”
