One of at least four Americans held in Yemen released

An American missing in Yemen has been released.

Oman’s official news agency reported Monday that the American was “transferred” from Sanaa to Oman with the aid of Omani authorities.

“Oman has helped the American government … find the missing [American] citizen in Yemen,” Oman News Agency said about instructions from Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

According to the Washington Post, at least three other Americans are being held in Yemen by Houthi rebels. Though it is not clear where they are located and if they are in the same place, several of them are believed to be held in the capital city of Sanaa.

Other Americans may be held both inside and outside the capital, officials also said.

Information remains scarce because of the tricky relationship between the U.S. and the Houthis. The Houthis, backed by Iran, ousted the U.S.-backed Yemeni government from Sanaa in February.

According to Yemeni officials, the Americans were detained at different times over the past week to 10 days. However, the circumstances of how and why they were taken into custody is unclear.

“It looks like they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” the Yemeni official said. There is no indication they had been physically harmed.
