Teddy gets ornamental treatment

This year’s White House Christmas ornament’s design has been revealed and it’s a tribute to Teddy Roosevelt and his kids. The front of the ornament shows Santa Claus in front of a building that is clearly labeled “White House” saying, “I hear there are some kids in the White House this year.” The image comes from a cartoon published in Harper’s Weekly in 1901. The back, depicts Roosevelt’s son Archie showing the president and the first family a secret Christmas tree in a closet in the White House. Apparently Roosevelt was so into conservation that he banned Christmas trees from the premises.

This year’s ornament can be purchased for $17.95 and can be ordered from the White House Historical Association. Past years’ ornaments are available for purchase as well.
