In a departure from typical politicking, Massachusetts Democratic congressional candidate and Marine Corps veteran Seth Moulton kept his awards for heroism a secret.
The Boston Globe reported on Oct. 18 that Moulton, a Marine Corps who served in Iraq, won two medals because he “fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire.” Moulton never publicized his decorated status, and the Globe had to press him on the issue. Only his campaign manager knew about it, and he didn’t even tell his parents until this week.
“There is a healthy disrespect among veterans who served on the front lines for people who walk around telling war stories,” Moulton told the Globe.
“Look, we served our country, and we served the guys next to us,” he added. “And it’s not something to brag about.”
Moulton beat incumbent John Tierney in the Democratic primary and now faces former Massachusetts Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei in the general. The Cook Political Report says the race leans Democratic.
