Nine arrested in Capitol Hill demonstrations

U.S. Capitol police arrested nine protesters who gathered inside the Rayburn House office building on Monday to read the names of Americans killed in the Iraq war.

The protesters were arrested for unlawful assembly, spokeswoman Sergeant Kimberly Schneider said. They had gathered around a pool in the courtyard of the office building that houses members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The protesters tossed yellow roses into the water while reading the names of the dead. Police ordered them to stop but they refused, Schneider said. Demonstrators also held protests at the Hart Senate building, but no arrests were made, Schneider said.

Also Monday, the U.S. Capitol Police union said that police supervisors ordered officers not to arrest protesters over the weekend. The officers were told to yield ground to the protesters, who then spray-painted some stairs at the Capitol, the union said ina news release.
