U.S. Capitol Police have charged the suspect in Monday’s gun incident at the Capitol Visitor Center with two criminal offenses under Washington, D.C. law.
Tenn. resident Larry R. Dawson, 66, was charged late Monday with assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer while armed.
Dawson pulled a gun on police at a security checkpoint around 3:00 Monday afternoon. An officer shot and struck him. Dawson was arrested and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries.
USCP confirmed the suspect is in stable but critical condition and will be taken to the District of Columbia Superior Court following his release from the hospital.
Police have also secured Dawson’s vehicle, a pickup truck parked on the west side of the Capitol. The spokesman said they will search the vehicle once a judge grants them a warrant.
Dawson is believed to have disrupted a House floor speech last October, when he interrupted it to tell members of Congress he was a “prophet from God.”
