Everyone is focused on North Korea today and I would point you to Ethan Epstein’s “Three Questions” piece about the upcoming (possibly?) meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un and Steve Hayes’ piece on the dangers of such a meeting.
But at the 35,000-foot-level, I cannot possibly recommend highly enough this long Conversation with Nick Eberstadt.
Eberstadt makes a number of points, the biggest of which is that the West dismisses North Korea at its own peril. The North Koreans survived where the communists could not. They have perfected the practice of totalitarianism to a greater degree than any regime in the history of humanity. They have a strategic view of the world and of their place in it.
These are not the bumbling villains depicted by Hollywood.
Go listen to Eberstadt. You won’t regret it.
