Ben Carson to announce 2016 plans May 4

Ben Carson will announce his presidential plans on May 4.

Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and conservative darling, will announce whether or not he will seek the 2016 Republican presidential nomination from the Detroit Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, officials said Monday. It is a ticketed event, though an official time has not been set.

If he announces that he will in fact run, he will join Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as the GOPers who have so far officially declared.

Carson’s presidential exploration committee — formed early March — brought in more than $2.1 million in its first four weeks, according to the campaign manager Barry Bennett.

The best-selling author and Presidential Medal of Freedom award-winner has never held public office.

With nine points, Carson polls fifth among a crowded field of potential 2016 Republican presidential nominees, according to a RealClearPolitics average of polls. He is within striking distance of the leader, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush who has 16.5 points.
